Slow-worm

Slow-worm

It's been about 10 years since I've seen a slow-worm, but last week one suddenly popped up in my own garden. I quickly gathered up my Nikon 105/2.8 VR macro lens and my macro flashes. The sun was about to set which gave an exciting but also very challenging background. The distance and the strength of the flash had to be adjusted several times to get the lighting right, but the end result wasn't too bad. . .

I had my 3.5 year old son as a field assistant for this exercise. He received guidance in the difference between the slow-worm and poison snakes, even though the slow-worm looks like a snake, it is totally harmless.

I really enjoyed the images you put up in your blog. Beautiful photography. I will be watching for new pics from new expeditions.

I have a question in the technical front. I noticed you keep your iso well into 1600-2000 in most of your photos. I want to understand why you chose to do this as opposed to adjusting the other 2 variables to get a cleaner image with a lower iso value. Is this an esthetic choice or did the circumstances force the high iso ratings?
    Thanks in advance.

@Mehmet -  This is the question i was going to ask after i saw these photographs.
I imagine the high iso was because of the sun setting but  i saw in some of your other photos that you  also have really high iso?

    Hi Mehmet

Good to hear that you like my pictures!
I only recommend to use high ISO 1600+ with the Nikon D3S. The image quality with D3S at ISO 2000 is so great that I sometimes forget to adjust the ISO-vaue down. For macro shots it might be good to use high ISO to get short shutter speeds during windy conditions.

    Hi

My default ISO setting on the D3S is often ISO 1600 due to lack of noise. On all other cameras I have used (also the earlier Canon cameras) I don´t like to push the ISO above ISO 800…

  5. That's really interesting about the D3S. It must be really liberating to use a camera that is so light sensitive.
