Many people ask me what kind of photo equipment I use and recommend. Here's a list of the equipment that I use, along with my recommendations. I want to emphasize that these recommendations are based on my personal shooting experiences in the field, and not based on clinical lab tests. Other photographers and magazines may offer differing opinions and recommendations, but I hope that you find some of my tips helpful.

As a photographer primarily interested in nature photography, I specialize in action shots of birds and animals. I also work with landscapes and macros, in addition to portrait and product photography. That´s why I have a broad range of equipment well suited for both outdoor photography and studio use.

I have used symbols to indicate what kind of situations the equipment is mostly suited for, without excluding it for other purposes. For example, a powerful telephoto lens most suitable for photography of birds, animals and sports, can also work well for detailed images of landscapes, close portrait or other purposes.

The stars refer both to the quality and how satisfied I am with the equipment. This rating is subjective, so take it for what it is!

My list of field reviews will continue to grow when I have time to write more reviews, but I will focus on the equipment and accessories I use regularly. I will also include some «Backstage – in the field» shots & videos from my expeditions.

Cameras

There are many cameras available for photographers, but after my transition from Canon to Nikon in March 2010, I have especially been fascinated by the image quality and functionality of two Nikon DSLR bodies.

Lenses

Nikon has done an impressive upgrade of their lenses with Nano Crystal Coat, fast and precise AF, great image stabilizers (VR), to name a few. In particular, the quality and range of pro lenses for full frame cameras (FX) has been given priority. The results are many great Nikon lenses to choose between. Nikon also have many good DX lenses available for the 1.5 crop factor cameras. Since I have only used the FX series lenses, I will discuss these lenses in the list below.

Hello, Thanks for the wonderful pictures and website. As we all know a camera without a lens is useless. That is precisely why DxO Mark broadened its ratings to include real-world analysis they call Peak Score (http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/en/Lens-with-Camera/Lens-rankings/Peak-Score) which renders as practically irrelevant isolated camera sensor ratings. Practical camera IQ is only obtained when we make a picture. Surely you do not want us to believe otherwise. Will any top flight photographer, including you, fail to get great pictures with any camera/lens combination in the top 6 or 7? Of course not. It is really gratifying that you have settled on gear you really like.

I've been checking http://www.nikonfieldreviews.com every month since you announced it earlier this year, and I'm VERY excited that you're finally posting!
Like you, I was impressed with the 2.0x Mk III teleconverter for how much better it is than previous teleconverters. I used one this year at the Indianapolis 500 with my 70-200 VR II. And I'm also glad to see that one of favorite lenses, the 14-24, is in your bag.
Even though I've already got an 85mm f/1.4 AF-S, I'm looking forward to seeing your thoughts.

    Hi Gee

I agree with you. You need both camera and lens to get great image quality! I have included one DxO Mark test with D3X + 70-200/2.8 in my reviews.

    HI Ole
What has happened to the Canon gear you had with you in Antarctica last November 2009?
It looks like you have had a complete change over from Canon to Nikon.
How do you compare the two different makes.
You had a Canon 300mm f2.8 down there, how does the Nikon 300 compare.

    Regards
    Gordon Lamb

    Hi,

It would also be great to see what other gear you use on your photoshots , such as tripods and bags etc.
I can image there is not that much gear that you can take with you leaving in a zodiac for example so It would be interesting to see what you use and can recommend.

PS: Love your site and pictures
