The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens features an innovative Vibration Reduction (VR) system that allows handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions. The VR system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed 4 stops faster than what the camera is set for. [Read more tech info]

  MY EXPERIENCES

In 2010 the Nikon 70-200/2.8 lens had a major upgrade, with Nano Crystal Coat, a new VR system, better functionality with FX cameras, and improved AF. The new Nikon AF-S 70-200/2.8G ED VR II is now one of the best zoom lenses available, suitable for almost any purpose. The 70-200/2.8 lens is one of three lenses I always have with me, together with the 14-24/2.8 and 24-70/2.8. With a zoom range from 70-200 mm this lens is very useable for portraits and landscapes. I also use 70-200/2.8 when I want to capture people, birds and animals in their environment. 70-200mm lens with the new VR system is also very well suited for handheld photography.

The lens is robust and weather sealed and can withstand hard use in harsh environments. I've already used this lens on several expeditions without problems.

The new Nikon 70-200/2.8 mm lens won this year's TIPA award for the best professional lens! The combination of this lens with Nikon D3X also gives you the best scores of all the combinations of lenses and cameras DxOMark has tested [read about the test here]. I can highly recommend this lens for almost any shooting assignment!

 RECOMMENDED EXTRAS
  • TC-14E II Teleconverter - Increases the focal length by 40%, i.e. 200mm becomes an 280mm. The aperture is reduced from f/2.8 to f/4.0. Auto-focus speed and image sharpness are slightly affected.
  • 77mm Pola Filter – I have chosen to use original Nikon filters since they work very well.
