Gorillas in Rwanda

I'm now back from a successful photo safari to Africa. This time we started in Rwanda with an intense two day trek looking for gorillas in the Volcano National Park, on the border to Uganda and the Congo. The agenda for both days called for a relatively medium length 1.5 hour walk each way. This was not difficult since it was possible to hire people to carry our bags.

The first day we visited a family of about 15 gorillas. We found this group in dense vegetation at 2725 meter altitude. It was almost surreal to sit just 5 meters away from these fascinating animals. Luckily it was overcast with soft light and no harsh contrast. After 1 hour with the gorillas we had to go back again.

The next day started surprisingly well with photographing some cranes right next to the lodge we stayed at. Later, around noon we found a large family group of 20 gorillas, including Rwanda's second largest silverback. Unfortunately the sun was intense resulting in very harsh contrasts.

Gorilla-trekking is not the cheapest trip you can do, but if you want to see gorillas in the wild, then Rwanda is the best place to do it. Let me know if you dream of photographing or observing these animals, since I plan to do another photo safari on gorillas.
