An evening with the Red Helleborine

Last week I had my greatest evening as a “flower photographer”. Usually I photograph wildlife, but for some reason I really like to photograph wild orchids.

Last year we started to plan a trip for the most rare and beautiful orchids in Norway – the Red Helleborine (Cephalanthera rubra) which are growing only a few places in southern parts of Norway. One of theses spots is not far from home, and together with two friennds we had an amazing evening with these flowers.

The location of the orchids were perfect with reflecting water in the backgroud and possibilities for low evening sunlight. I used my Nikon macro R1C1 flash system, but in the evening I switched to my LED light setup. The lightning of the flowers might be challenging when shooting backlight, but with some experience it’s not a big deal. This evening I was also focused on shooting the orchids in their environment. Not only close-ups with my 105 macro lens, but also wide-angles with 14-24/2.8 and 16mm fisheye. My #1 camera for this macro photo session was my Nikon D800!

I really enoyed this evening, and I’m interesting to hear which of the images you like the most…
