#6 King Penguins in snow blizzard

Penguins are always great to photograph, even when the weather is “bad”. In this picture the wind was very strong, so it was difficult to see the birds even when they came quite close. But, when I got at least one of the penguins in focus it was well worth the effort.

2011 was an amazing year for me as a wildlife photographers. I had some great safaries and expeditions to places like: Svalbard, the sub-Antarctic islands of New Zealand, Galapagos, India and Kenya. I also had 2 awarded images in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2011 and 3 images in the german contest GDT. Below you can see 50 of my favorite images I’ve taken in 2011. #5 Great Grey Owl

It’s always fun to photograph wild owls. Sometimes they also can be pretty tame, like this Great Grey Owl in northern Finland. In this shot I used my 16-35/2.8 wide angle and could include some of the landscape. The fresh bright snow almost worked as a big flash with softbox.

#4 Relaxed Mountain gorilla

Mountain gorillas are amazing creatures! I’m now preparing for my next photo safari to the gorillas in Rwanda and hope to get similar opportunities as on my previous trip in 2010. In the photograph above I decided to get low and shoot through the leafs to get the blurry green foreground. It was also an advantage to use a high-ISO camera, together with a 70-200/2.8 lens with 1,4x tele converter.

#3 Penguin in ice

On my first photo expedition to Antarctica in 2006, I had some really nice meetings with the "locals". On of my best memories is from Plenau Bay where we found this Gentoo penguin among big icebergs. I was lucky to have a zodiak driver who listened to me and diredted the zodiak so I could photograph the penguin through the "window" in the iceberg between me and the bird. In this shot I used a small tele-zoom to include the environment, and not only frame the penguin. Even after 5 expeditions to Antarctica / sub-Antarctica, this is still one of my favourite penguin images.

#2 Golden eagle

The Golden eagle is one of the most fascinating of the European birds. They are quite shy, but especially during the cold winter they might show up in front of a hide if there’s some food available. I’ve been fortunate to live just a few hundred meters away from a nesting pair of Golden eagles. Even though I’ve often seen the eagles, I’ve only photographed them seriously 5-10 times. The photograph above was taken on a windy day at my friend’s Ole Martin Dahle’s hide in Flatanger, Norway.

This travel to Masai Mara in the lead of Ole Jørgen was really good for my purpose and to me the most cost-effective wildlife-photo-trip ever. I have been in other resorts in MM earlier, but never in so many different animal scenes in that short time.

Even after 3 months I still “find” and work with unique pictures that were taken in those few days.

The motives are of course important, but even more, to be there in the good light and right position from before sunrise and 2-3 hours in the morning and the opposite in the afternoon until after dark. Ole Jørgen arrange this before we arrive so there is nothing going “by-chance”. In many other places and especially if travelling on your own, it is difficult to be early enough out and staying late enough where you want to take the best pictures in magic light.

Our phantastic masai guides who are usually the first to spot more seldom animals, also know enough and are taught by Ole Jørgen about positioning so they place the cars optimally.

I have been working with digital cameras since 2006, more advanced wild life photographing from 2008. This time I learned some extra tricks from Ole Jørgen and due to the number of opportunities and also help and inspiration from my co-travellers, I got pictures I could not imagine I would ever be able to take 3 years ago. Actually I am still on that “surf”.

My equipment now consist usually of 2 full-frame cameras, one with 300/2,8 and another with 500/4 (sometimes + converter 1,4) + one lens 70-200/2,8. To avoid lots of dust in your camera and losing many opportunities it is essential not to have to change lens most of the times.

Because of the heavy program and beeing out in the mud, sometimes under the car, it is important to keep everything simple and practical like going to a summer mountain trip with good outdoor shoes and clothes and some thin gortex or similar for the rain. Some cover for the camera may also be needed.

It is also important to spend the time in the camp for sleep, eat and relaxation when not out in the field, so optimized routines and capacity for batteries, memory cards and backup is essential to avoid disturbing frustration, to catch the best images and bringing the raw files safe back home.

#1 Fiordland crested penguin

I’ve always been fascinated with penguins. On my fifth expedition to Antarctica / sub-Antarctica I had the opportunity to photograph one of the most vulnerable species – the Fiordland crested penguin. Already the first evening I had some close encounters with these beautiful birds when they came on shore in the evening. I used slow shutter speed at 1/25 second to capture the blurred water motion.
